Good Inspector Qualifications

  1. Training

    Beginning inspectors who use "The Homebook" have passed:
    A. 60 hours of classroom work
    B. 250 hours of field training
    C. 50 hours of text/CD-ROM advanced study
    D. Demonstrated competency in performing a home inspection.

  2. Certification

    THE "American Society of Home Inspectors" has the highest standards of admission for home inspectors in the United States. New inspectors should become an "ASHI Candidate." In order to become AN "ASHI Certified Member," a home inspector must:

    A. Complete at least 250 fee paid, complete home inspections.

    B. Demonstrate proper report writing. Candidates must submit ten reports (of ASHI's choice) to ASHI for review.

    C. Candidate must pass two written tests demonstrating command of knowledge relevant home inspections (roofing, structural systems and components, exteriors, plumbing, heating ventilation and air conditioning, interiors and insulation) standards, ethics and report writing.

    D. ASHI members are required to complete at least 20 hours of continuing education annually.

  3. Communication

    A. Inspectors should have the ability to easily work with clients and agents.

    B. Inspectors should have the ability to disclose information in a non-threatening manner. House problems do have solutions. Most solutions are easy and inexpensive.
